Dav Whatmore resigns as Nepal’s Head-Coach

Nepal Men’s Cricket Team Head Coach Dav Whatmore on Friday (August 27) announced his decision to step down from the post. In a letter addressed to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Whatmore said that he would like to step down from the post after the conclusion of the World Cup qualifiers on September 19.

In a letter accessed by Golden Duck, Whatmore said it was a very tough decision for him which he took as he was finding it tough to spend time away from his family during the pandemic.

“The letter is to confirm that I want to resign from the head coach position of Nepal Cricket Team immediately after the conclusion of the world cup qualifier on 19th September to be held in Oman. I also wish to confirm that this is a very tough decision I have to make after making the deepest of my thoughts on the same.

Whatmore added that it was his personal decision as the CAN and its players had been extremely cooperative with him during his tenure.

“Due to the ongoing pandemic around the world, it is very difficult for me to stay away from my family for such a long time. I wish to confirm you that this is entirely my personal decision and I truly enjoyed working with CAN & its players who are extremely cooperative to me throughout the entire tenure,” he added.

Whatmore went on to add that his manager had the right to speak on his behalf as he wanted to concentrate on the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.

“As I fully want to concentrate on the upcoming world cup qualifying games hence I will request you to speak with my manager Mr Kaustav Lahiri if you have any queries as he is fully authorized to speak on my behalf. It is a real honour to get associated with CAN & I truly enjoyed my time with CAN. I wish CAN all the very best for the future,” Whatmore concluded.

Whatmore was appointed as Nepal’s head coach in December last year and took charge at the start of 2021 with qualification for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia the primary focus. Nepal failed to qualify for the 2021 edition. Whatmore had taken over after Nepal was without a head coach for around ten months following the resignation of Umesh Patwal.

Dav Whatmore had guided Nepal to a Tri-series win against Netherlands and Malaysia earlier this year. Whatmore, who guided Sri Lanka to victory in the 50-overs World Cup in 1996, was named head coach of Nepal’s national team in December 2020. The Colombo-born Australian boasts of good coaching experience and has also coached Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe in the past.
