Building Bonds and Backyard Fences: A Journey of Construction and Friendship

May 11, 2023 | Engineering | 0 comments

Just over a month ago, I embarked on a new chapter in my life as I arrived in the United States from Nepal to pursue my master’s degree in Civil Structural Engineering. Eager to immerse myself in the world of construction in this new land, I found myself attending a Reinforced Concrete Class one day. Little did I know that this class would lead to an unexpected opportunity.

During the class, a striking individual with long blonde hair, stylish spectacles, and a distinguished old-fashioned mustache stood before us. He posed a question that piqued my curiosity: would anyone like to join him in a backyard fence project? I couldn’t resist the chance to gain practical experience and learn about construction practices in the US. Intrigued by the prospect, I approached him after the class, revealing my interest in joining the project. As fate would have it, that smart-looking guy was none other than Iain Blair, who would soon become one of my closest mates.

Teaming up with Iain, we embarked on our backyard fence project, both of us venturing into this type of project for the first time. To ensure a smooth and successful construction process, we decided to break down the project into several simpler steps:

Step 1: Making the Base and Formwork for the Wall

Our initial focus was on creating a solid foundation and formwork for the fence wall. We meticulously prepared the base, ensuring its stability and levelness. By establishing a strong groundwork, we set the stage for the fence’s structural integrity, laying the groundwork for the upcoming construction.

Step 2: Brick Laying

With the foundation in place, we delved into the art of brick laying. It was an exciting yet challenging endeavor, as we carefully positioned each brick, applying mortar to secure them in place. The rhythmic tapping of the trowel against the bricks echoed our dedication and commitment as we gradually constructed the wall, layer by layer. Attention to detail was paramount as we strived to achieve perfect alignment, creating a visually appealing and structurally sound fence.

Step 3: Rubbing off the Edges

To add the finishing touches and ensure a polished appearance, we dedicated time to rubbing off the rough edges of the bricks. Utilizing a rubbing stone, we meticulously smoothed the surfaces, enhancing the overall finesse of our creation. This step not only contributed to the aesthetic appeal of the fence but also prioritized safety, eliminating any potential sharp edges that could pose a risk.

Reflecting upon our journey of constructing the backyard fence, I am filled with a profound sense of achievement and gratitude. What began as an impromptu decision to join Iain in this project transformed into a valuable learning experience and a treasured friendship. Our step-by-step approach allowed us to navigate uncharted territory with confidence and yielded remarkable results. From establishing a solid foundation and meticulous brick laying to refining the edges, each step played a vital role in the construction of our backyard fence.

As I gaze upon the finished fence, I am reminded of the power of seizing opportunities and embracing new experiences. This project not only provided me with invaluable insights into construction practices in the US but also reinforced the importance of collaboration, determination, and the willingness to step out of our comfort zones. I am grateful for the knowledge gained and the memories created throughout this journey, and I eagerly anticipate future endeavors in the realm of construction.
